the engagement hat
Artist's statement.
Lucy Johnstone's work confronts head on our tidy notions of clear delineations between myth, culture and history. Our sense of the world and our place within it. Notions of other-worldliness, times and places forgotten and the boundaries between them, they are blurred, eroded bent and subverted.
Through parody, paradox, form and colour Lucy reaches into a rich and diverse compendium of "otherness", inverting, distorting, reinventing and reversing. Sometimes pulling us into this parody and paradox, sometimes pushing this very "otherness" into our world, we are left with little choice than to accept its presence here with us.
The challenge then for us is not to question the apparent, parody, whimsy; charm and chance that Lucy's work brings with it… rather question our own notions of reality and the foundations that reality is built upon.
I am very grateful to Stephen Brown of brownbull.com for the production of this site and his endless patience. I hope you enjoy browsing through the galleries. Please leave any comments you have and if you are interested in any of the work or in making a commission do not hesitate to contact me!
